Why We March
In 1887 Gus Henderson marched with other African-Americans — registered Winter Park voters — across the railroad tracks to vote to help Winter Park become an incorporated city.
At the same time, two African-American men were elected to positions as city Aldermen.
Their terms of office ended in 1893, 126 years ago.
Since that time, no African-American has been elected to office in the city of Winter Park.
Barbara Chandler, candidate for Winter Park City Commission, is running to be the first African-American elected to office since the 1800s.
On Tuesday, March 12, 2019 — election day — Barbara will be marching with Winter Park citizens across the tracks to Park Avenue, then on to the voting polls to commemorate Gus Henderson’s march. Click below to learn more about March time & location.
